"Angkor Wat is a reminder of our past glory when Cambodia was at its zenith and no other country could rule us. It was important for art and culture and at that time our leaders followed the four dharmas (teachings): compassion, forgiveness, consciousness, and fairness. Angkor Wat is on the flag so that we remember to follow these dharmas."

Cambodian Khmer Classical Dance

The carvings of ancient dancers on the walls of the temples at Angkor continue to inspire Cambodian dancers today. Traditionally, these celestial dancers play the important role of messenger between the gods and men. Many classical dances tell the epic stories of Khmer mythology, while dancers and choreographers also create and perform new works.

The intricate hand positions, body postures, and dance movements take many years to master. In Cambodian American communities, dancers have become important ambassadors, introducing Americans to Cambodian culture.
