The complex of temples, reservoirs, causeways, and palaces at Angkor covers an area of 100 square miles. Completed between 800 and 1200 A.D., Angkor Wat was home to an estimated one million people.
The builders used very advanced technology for their time constructing soaring temples of large, carved stones that fit together so snugly they required no mortar. They engineered a sophisticated system of reservoirs and canals to irrigate their rice fields.
Bas-relief carvings and freestanding sculptures adorn the buildings and tell stories of a powerful and spiritual people.
