The chief name associated with this collection is Abraham H. Peeler. Most of the materials that compose the collection were created or collected by him between the years 1915 and 1991, with the bulk related to his career as principal of the J. C. Price School in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Researchers will find the Peeler Papers rich in materials pertaining to the local public school system, particularly J. C. Price School, and the evolution of African-American education in North Carolina. Other noteworthy items include material related to the development of Nocho Park, Greensboro's first city park established for African Americans, and Camp Carlson, one of the first camps in North Carolina created for African-American scouting.
The collection also contains material related to the Greensboro Men's Club, St. Matthews United Methodist Church, the Charlotte Hawkins Brown Historical Foundation, Tuskegee Institute and Booker T. Washington.

Provenance: The Abraham H. Peeler Papers were donated to the Greensboro Historical Museum in 1998 by Monroe Peeler, son of the person for whom the collection is named. The Peeler collection was assigned accession number 1998.73.2.
Processing: This collection was organized and the finding aid prepared by Francis D. Pitts III in June 2000.
Born in Greensboro in 1904, Abraham H. Peeler, the person for whom the collection is named, lived and worked as an administrator and educator in that city for most of his life. He is best remembered perhaps as the principal of the J. C. Price School, a position he held from 1931 until 1969. The bulk of the materials in the collection pertains to his experiences there and will help researchers interpret his stellar career as well as aspects of Greensboro's history. The collection is rich in information relating to the local public school system, particularly J. C. Price School, and the evolution of African-American education in North Carolina during a period marked by incremental change and progress in the face of formidable odds.
At school, Peeler pursued excellence and insisted on, sometimes pointedly requesting, top performances from his faculty and staff; he sought out and promoted cutting-edge technology of the day; and he networked within the community and beyond for greater opportunities for black students and his peers. In addition to his regular school activities, Peeler maintained a lifelong interest in organized sports. For thirty-two years he officiated high school and college football and basketball games in his "spare time."
To remember Peeler as an administrator and sports enthusiast only is to obscure his impact as a leader in Greensboro's African-American community. Beyond the schoolyard, Peeler championed many causes. Long an advocate of the benefits of recreation, he lobbied for and helped develop and promote the first city park, called Nocho Park, established for African Americans. In 1940 Peeler, as Chairman of Publicity, helped promote Camp Carlson, one of the first camps in North Carolina created for African-American scouting. In recognition of his stature in the community, Peeler was named the first black member of the Greensboro Recreation Commission in 1947, an action universally praised.
An active member of St. Matthews United Methodist Church in Greensboro his whole life, Peeler conscientiously kept materials that document the history of that institution, the oldest African-American church in the city. Peeler also was a member of the Greensboro Men's Club for many years. Founded by North Carolina A & T faculty in the 1930s, the GMC, which dedicated itself to pursuing high intellectual and social standards, sought to lend moral and financial support to worthy causes in the community. The organization attracted many of the city's most successful black professionals who had made public service a central concern in their lives. GMC material identifies these people and will help illuminate the role they played in the community.
Other items in the collection inform the lives of equally committed professionals, such as Peeler's father, Silas A. Peeler, who was a former president of Bennett College and a community leader in his day. In addition, materials relating to Tuskegee Institute and Booker T. Washington no doubt will prove to be quite helpful to future researchers.
Biographical Sources: The primary sources contained in the collection provided the information that afforded a rough sketch of the principal subject.
Types of materials in this collection include audiotapes, correspondence, educational materials, financial and literary documents, photographs and slides, printed matter and scrapbooks.
The bulk of materials in this collection were created or collected by Abraham H. Peeler. Much of the material relates to his career as an educator and administrator in the public school system of Greensboro, North Carolina. Of this material, the most comprehensive grouping is the J. C. Price School series (8:1-217), which contains items that will help inform the history of that school as well as the evolution of education in North Carolina during much of the twentieth century.
Noteworthy materials from this series include documents pertaining to accreditation (8:1-3); audiovisual items (8:4-8); correspondence (8:26-67); teachers' handbooks created by Peeler between the years 1941 and 1965 (8:75-95); photographs and slides (8:111-130, 159-160); reports about school activities, events and the state of education at a particular time (8:139-149); scrapbooks (8:152-158); staff/teacher files (8:161-216); and documents pertaining to the NC Teachers' Association (8:101-104). Other materials relating to Peeler's career in education can be found in the Jonesboro School series (3); the Miscellaneous series (4:1,4,9-14); and the Tuskegee Institute series (11).
Anyone interested in Peeler's activities outside of school will find ample material in some of the other series in the collection. In particular, researchers should see the Athletics series (1) for an overview of Peeler's lifelong involvement in organized sports; and the Nocho Park (5) and the Scouting series (10) for information on the role he played promoting better recreational opportunities in Greensboro for the African-American community.
An active member of St. Matthews United Methodist Church his whole life, Peeler kept many materials that document the history of that institution, the oldest African-American church in Greensboro (1866). Researchers should consult folders 9:10-13 for short sketches of the church's history and a scrapbook for biographical information and photographs of many of the pastors who presided over services (9:35). Other materials of interest include programs commemorating milestones (9:10-12,16,18,23-25); photographs and slides (9:29-33,36); and a pledge book from 1903 (9:34).
The Greensboro Men's Club series also contains noteworthy materials. Founded by North Carolina A & T faculty in the 1930s, the GMC, which dedicated itself to pursuing high intellectual and social standards, sought to lend moral and financial support to worthy causes in the community. The organization attracted many of the city's most successful black professionals, the majority of whom are identified in this series. In particular, researchers should see the folders containing thumbnail sketches (2:4-5) and photographs (2:8-65) of members.
The collection also contains material related to Peeler's role on the Advisory Council of the Charlotte Hawkins Brown Historical Foundation, Inc. (6:3,6) that reveals the process by which the Palmer Memorial Institute became a state historic site. Also of import in the collection are two small series containing information on S. A. Peeler, A. H. Peeler's father, and Booker T. Washington. In the former series, noteworthy items include photographs (7:4) and a compilation of outlines for sermons he gave over the course of his lifetime (7:3). In the latter series, the most important items pertain to a public speaking tour Washington made through North Carolina in 1910. In particular, researchers should see the journal containing observations that were made at each stop during the tour (12:2) and the group photograph in which some of the leading African-American educators of North Carolina appear with Washington (12:3).
1. Athletics. 5 folders (c. 130 items). c. 1915-1991.
The athletics series consists of materials relative to A. H. Peeler’s lifelong interest in sports and recreation. The bulk of the items are part of a scrapbook assembled by Peeler, which he tilted “Athletic Reflections By Old Abe, 1915-89” (1:1). Contained therein are materials related to his activities as a student athlete and his career officiating high school and college football and basketball games.
2. GSO Men’s Club. 68 folders (c. 350 items). 1951-1988.
This series contains materials pertinent to an organization originally founded by NC A & T faculty in the 1930s. Early on in its history, the GSO Men’s Club, dedicated to pursuing high intellectual and social standards, sought to lend moral and financial support to worthy causes in the community. Items include correspondence (2:2), financial documents (2:3), historical sketches of members (2:4-5), photographs (2:8-65) and assorted printed matter (2:7,66-68).
3. Jonesboro School. 4 folders (4 items). 1930-1984.
This small series consists of four items: a 1932 scrapbook, titled “Slavery As We’ve Heard It,” containing student narratives (3:1); an October 1930 memorandum from the school (3:2); a c. 1930 photograph of a group standing in front of a building, presumably the school (3:3); and a program to the school closing ceremony in 1984 (3:4).
4. Miscellaneous. 17 folders (c. 200 items). 1924-1989.
The miscellaneous series contains a diverse grouping of materials. Some of the more interesting items include photographs and printed matter from the Ashe St. (including a 1920-25 Minute Book) and Washington St. schools (4:1,14). Also of interest are an unidentified group of photographs and negatives that depict scenes of Greensboro and Guilford County from different periods (4:9,11-14). Of particular note are the images of Dudley High School (4:9.1 – 9.4).
5. Nocho Park. 8 folders (c. 50 items). 1932-1947.
This series contains interesting materials related to the development of recreational parks for African Americans in Greensboro during the 1930s and ‘40s, with the bulk pertaining to Nocho Park. Noteworthy items include specifications for the development of the park (5:3), a drawing of the proposed park area (5:2), a historical sketch of Nocho Park (5;3), newspaper clippings and a scrapbook of Nocho Park Playground, 1935 (5:4-6), and a number of images of activities at the park (5:4,6-7).
6. Palmer Memorial Institute. 7 folders (c. 100 items). 1975-1991.
The materials in this series document aspects of the process that helped the Palmer Memorial Institute became a state historic site. It appears as though the highlights of that process are in evidence through correspondence and printed matter Peeler came to possess as a supporter of the concept and as a member of the Advisory Council of the Charlotte Hawkins Brown Historical Foundation, Inc. (6:3,6). Items of note include an invitation and program to the Dedication Ceremony (6:6), materials relative to the first Advisory Council Meeting (6:6) and an audio recording of a “Children’s Chorus” in Sedalia in 1991 (6:1).
7. Peeler, Silas A. 5 folders (c. 50 items). 1889-1987.
This series contains materials pertaining to the life and work of Silas A. Peeler (1864-1948). The subject of the series was a former minister of St. Matthews United Methodist Church, onetime president of Bennett College and A. H. Peeler’s father. Items of note include correspondence (7:2), photographs (7:4), and personal notes and a compilation of outlines for sermons he gave over the course of his lifetime (7:3).
8. J.C. Price School. 217 folders (c. 4000 items). c. 1937-1984.
The J. C. Price series contains the largest number of items, and because of its variety and breadth, it should be considered a highlight of the collection. The materials contained herein help document the career of A. H. Peeler and the history of the school over a thirty-year period. Practically every folder holds something that will inform the history of either subject. Noteworthy materials include documents pertaining to the accreditation process (8:1-3); items related to audiovisual education (8:4-8); correspondence (8:27-67); teachers' handbooks compiled by Peeler (8:75-95); photographs and slides (8:111-130, 159-160); reports (8:139-149); staff/teacher files (8:161-216); photo. scrapbooks (8:152-158; include Price buildings, classroom scenes, Field/May days; athletic/sports events); and printed matter related to conferences (8:10-25) and teachers' associations (8:101-104).
9. St. Matthews United Methodist Church. 36 folders (c. 250 items). c. 1903-1990.
This series contains materials relative to the history and growth of St. Matthews United Methodist Church in Greensboro, North Carolina, the oldest African-American church in that city (1866). Noteworthy items include audiotapes (9:1-4); historical sketches of the church (9:10-13); programs commemorating milestones (9:10-12,16,18,23-25); photographs and slides (9:29-33,36); a pledge book from 1903 (9:34); and a scrapbook containing biographical information on and photographs of many of the pastors who presided over services at the various locations of the church (9:35).
10. Scouting. 8 folders (c. 70 items). c. 1933-1987.
This series contains materials relating to the African-American scouting experience in the 1930s and ‘40s in Guilford County, North Carolina. Noteworthy items include correspondence (10:3), photographs (10:5), copies of Handbook for Boys and Songs Scouts Sing (10:6); and materials relating to Camp Carlson (10:2), of which Peeler was the Chairman of Publicity in 1940.
11. Tuskegee Institute. 12 folders (c. 185 items). 1910-1960.
This series is composed of materials collected by Silas A. and Abraham H. Peeler between the years 1910 and the early 1960s. Noteworthy materials include documents and photographs related to the Tuskegee Regional Principals’ Workshop of 1953 (11:5-11); photographs of the Tuskegee Institute Kindergarten, 1910-11 (11:3); and a 1920 copy of “Nautilus,” Tuskegee’s annual (11:4).
12. Washington, Booker T. 4 folders (21 items). 1910-1974.
The bulk of this small series contains materials related to a public speaking tour Booker T. Washington made through North Carolina in 1910. The most important item is the journal in which observations are made at each stop during the tour (12:2). The author of these notes is unidentified. Other noteworthy items include a group photograph in which some of the leading African-American educators of North Carolina appear with Washington (12:3), and an engraved invitation to a banquet held in Washington’s honor in Washington, North Carolina (12:4).
